WASHINGTON – (WMAL) Former Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell has largely stayed out of the public eye since his corruption conviction was overturned by the United States Supreme Court in June 2016. But he made an appearance in a Facebook video for Republican gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie, playing a chatty backseat driver.
McDonnell can be seen chastising Gillespie for not wearing a seat belt, alternately driving too slow and too fast, and waiting to turn right on red.
McDonnell’s name had been back in the news Tuesday, as his Supreme Court case was cited by a federal appeals panel in overturning corruption convictions against former New York State Senate Majority Leader Dean Skelos and his son. The ruling noted McDonnell’s case had narrowed the legal definition of corruption. Skelos will be re-tried. Legal observers have noted McDonnell’s case could also have an effect on the ongoing corruption trial of New Jersey Senator Bob Menendez.
