WASHINGTON (WMAL) – The process is underway to strip the name of the Confederate president from Jefferson Davis Highway (Rt. 1) in the city of Alexandria.
A survey will be online through September 15th (CLICK HERE), Alexandriava.gov/jeffersondavishighway and public hearings are scheduled for Aug. 17 and Sept. 25.
“The survey is not a vote or a poll. It’s really just a way to brainstorm suggestions for the most appropriate new names for the street,” said Alexandria City spokesperson Craig Fifer.
Alexandria and Arlington residents and business owners will be able to make up to three name suggestions and give explanations of their choices.
Fifer stresses that they’re not looking for feedback on whether to change the name. The advisory group already voted to do that. They just want name suggestions.
The advisory group will consider the public’s recommendations and then make their own to the city manager on Oct. 5. The city manager will then give his pick to the city council, which will make the final call.
