CNN contributor Jeffrey Lord spoke to Steve Malzberg this morning about North Korea, among other things, and Lord thinks that Trump’s critics in Washington should take a look at history before casting judgement on his tough talk and rhetoric. Take a listen:
In light of all of the stuff with the President and his language with North Korea…in going through Steven Hayward’s biography of Ronald Reagan, ‘The Age of Reagan’, when Ronald Reagan gave his first press conference as President and said that the Soviets reserve unto themselves the right to lie and cheat, the town went crazy! I mean, they were just appalled at this kind of language! Not to mention when he said, about a year or a little more than a year later, called them the Evil Empire – This kind of thing was not done in terms of dealing with the Soviet Union, and in Reagan’s view that’s exactly what the problem was! And I would suggest that President Trump’s critics take a good long look at how Ronald Reagan dealt with the Soviet Union in terms of his language, because it was starkly different from his predecessors, and as Margaret Thatcher would later say at Reagan’s funeral, he won the cold war without ever firing a shot!
