WASHINGTON (WMAL) – Some members of the Fairfax County Board of Supervisors are sick of waiting for the school board to install cameras to ticket drivers who don’t stop for school busses, so they’re taking action.
At the last board of supervisors meeting, supervisor Jeff McKay put in a formal request for the school system to give his board an update on where it stands with this.
“We’re sitting here, I think exactly 25 days before school starts, and I have not gotten any further information about whether or not this can be implemented this school year,” said McKay.
He said it has been a long process to get to the point where the school board would even be allowed to approve a program to put cameras on school busses. First they had to get permission from the general assembly, then the DMV commissioner, and then the board had to change a county ordinance.
McKay said the school board manages and owns the busses, so it’s up to board members to implement a program, which he had hoped they would have done by now.
“This is not about revenue. This is not about punishing people for making a mistake. This is about protecting our kids,” said McKay.
Montgomery County started installing cameras on school busses in 2014. Those cameras have been giving out 88 citations a day.
