SEVERNA Pk, Md (WMAL)– A 4-year-old girl and her 51-year-old uncle are dead after what Anne Arundel County Police are calling a double accidental drowning.  It happened Thursday afternoon at a home along Jamar Drive at Asbury Drive.

“This was a house that the homeowners were nice enough to let kids from the neighborhood swim in their pool as long as they had adult supervision,” says Anne Arundel Police Lt. Ryan Frashure.

Lt. Frasure tells WMAL the man was acting as supervisor of a group of children, even though he did not know how to swim.

“Several kids were swimming. The 4-year-old, who did not know how to swim decided to jump into the deep end of the pool. When the other kids observed she was struggling to swim, they made several attempts to save her by handing her the pole for the skimmer for the pool.”

Lt. Frasure says once they were unsuccessful with that, they got the man’s attention. After trying to save her from outside the pool, he eventually jumped in, even though he couldn’t swim.

“When the kids saw he was struggling to swim, they ran a few houses down and the man’s mother called 911.”

Both were taken to the hospital where they later died. Their names have not been made public.

Police are calling it a “tragic accident”. No criminal charges have been filed.
