WASHINGTON (WMAL) – A Spotsylvania County man was arrested and charged with holding his girlfriend and their two children captive in their home for at least two years.
Someone called the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s office July 29 asking deputies to go to the home on Mine Road and check on the family. When they got there, they found 43-year-old Kariem Moore on the front lawn. He became evasive after deputies told him why they had come to the house.
“While talking to Mr. Moore, the two deputies observed a female and two juveniles run out of a side door of the residence,” Carey said.
The woman was Moore’s girlfriend. The kids were the couple’s children.
Moore’s girlfriend and their two children were taken to a local hospital. The children were treated and released into the custody of other family members. Carey said their mother remains hospitalized in stable condition.
Moore was originally detained and then arrested once police learned the woman and two children were being held in the home against their will.
He was charged with three counts of felony abduction by force and one felony assault and battery charge.
“It is very disturbing, and it’s not a case you would respond to on a daily basis by any means,” Carey said.
He urges anyone who sees something that doesn’t look right to call the sheriff’s department.
