WASHINGTON (WMAL) – Republican Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan’s coming out against his party’s “skinny” healthcare repeal plan, which the Senate is expected to vote on Thursday after members failed to pass another plan Wednesday.
Hogan joined his counterparts in nine other states who signed a bipartisan letter to Senate leaders urging them to shoot down the “skinny repeal.”
“I’m not surprised that Gov. Hogan has come out the Republican plan. I think Governor Hogan is really more of a moderate,” said Melissa Deckman, a political science professor at Washington College.
Deckman said like other moderate Republicans who have signed the letter, including Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker and Ohio Gov. John Kasich, Hogan realizes many of his constituents aren’t in favor of the GOP healthcare plan. This is especially important to consider as he runs for re-election in 2018.
Democratic governors from Colorado, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Montana, and Louisiana signed the bill along with Republican governors from Nevada, Massachusetts, Ohio, Vermont, and Maryland.
