OCEAN CITY, Md. (WMAL) – Lifeguards in Ocean City pulled a 6-foot long dead shark from the water.
Ocean City officials say the shark was spotted around 3 pm on Monday near the 121st Street beach.
“They actually were able to go out into the ocean and properly retrieve it as they are trained to do,” said Jessica Waters, spokesperson for the Town of Ocean City.
Waters says they were not worried that it could harm anyone. It’s believed that it was a sand tiger shark.
“It’s not something that we see very commonly in Ocean City. The advice that we give to anyone on our beach is that you are swimming when the lifeguards are on duty,” said Waters.
Waters says different marine life sometimes washes ashore but that lifeguards are trained to know what to do.
There was a crowd on the beach at the time but it didn’t seem to startle too many people.
“Fortunately as soon as the shark was removed people went right back in and continued to enjoy the rest of their afternoon on the beach,” said Waters.
Waters says there was no visible injuries on the shark and its unclear why the shark died.
The public works department was able to dispose of the shark in its complex later in the day.
