STEVENSVILLE, MD — (WMAL) A possible tornado swept through an area just east of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge early Monday morning, leaving a path of destruction in the Stevensville, Bay City and Queenstown areas of Queen Anne County.
“We’ve had reports of three or four homes that lost parts of their homes. We’ve had several reports of roofs off homes, we’ve had one home that was blown off of its foundation, one total collapse of a house,” said county Director of Emergency Services Scott Haas in an early morning news briefing.
The storm left the immediate shoreline east of the Bay Bridge in total darkness, with approximately 10,000 Delmarva Power customers in the dark.
Meteorologists from the National Weather Service will be on the ground Monday morning to make a determination whether the damage was caused by a tornado, but officials on the ground say there was an obvious path of destruction.
“It looks like it went dead center in the community of Bay City, and started traveling north. It went across Route 8, and we’ve got a significant amount of damage caused to a townhouse complex up the street, and also at Thompson Creek shopping center. We’ve heard a lot of reports of damage to the stores there with windows blown out,” Said Haas.
A tornado warning had been posted for the area before the storm passed through.
Residents are advised to stay in their homes and to avoid downed power lines because they could still be live with electricity.
