ARLINGTON – (WMAL) In June, a massive beehive was found tucked away inside a vacant office building in Arlington County.

Inside the building on Shirlington Road was a hive that had a hive filled with about 70,000 bees. Some local beekeepers stepped in to help out.

“They were able to take down the plywood and go in and they found a lot of bees,” said Martha Kiene is with the Northern Virginia Beekeepers Association.

Kiene says about 100 pounds of honey was recovered from the hive. However, it was not usable because the hive was around contaminants.

The NVBA gets lots of requests for help with hive retrieval. And its volunteers will help out homeowners for free.

All you have to do is go to the association’s website at novabees.org

On the website you will find what is called the “swarm alert form.” That form will be sent to someone at the association who can track down someone to help you remove the bees.

“If we can educate people not to spray them, not to do anything with them. Just call a beekeeper. I can guarantee we will have someone there in a couple hours and we will take them off your hands,” said Kiene.
