Former Carl Sandburg Middle School Principal Terrence Eugene Yarborough has been charged with assault and battery following an April 4 incident.

The Fairfax County Police Department released a statement Tuesday:

We have charged 53-year-old Terrence Eugene Yarborough of Woodbridge, with assault and battery following an incident that occurred at Carl Sandburg Middle School in Alexandria.  On April 4 of this year, a female student who was 12 years old at the time, was in the cafeteria with a few friends. The principal, Terrence Yarborough, came into the cafeteria and asked the girl to pick something up off the floor and she said no. He asked her again and she said no a second time. Yarborough then allegedly smacked the girl on her buttocks. The victim left the cafeteria and reported the incident to a teacher. The school resource officer, FCPS authorities and Child Protective Services were notified and an investigation began. Yarborough was removed from the school and placed on administrative leave. Parallel investigations were conducted by the police department and FCPS Internal Affairs. On July 10, a criminal summons was obtained, charging Yarborough with misdemeanor assault and battery. On July 17, Yarborough came to the Mount Vernon District Police station where the misdemeanor criminal summons was served. He was released, and is scheduled to appear in Fairfax County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court on August 4.
