Listen as Larry spoke with Scott Richert, a Senior Content Network Manager at Our Sunday Visitor, regarding the Catholic Church’s view on open borders and immigration.
During the interview, O’Connor asked Richert to clarify the Catholic Church’s policy when it comes to immigrating to immigration:
O’Connor: In our country we, the people – the citizens, we define what our laws are, there are some countries were that’s not the case. So here, we the people, have determined listen no we want to control our border, we want to control immigration. So, when those two rights butt heads, what specifically is the Catholic teaching on that?
Richert: Right. Well, the Catholic teaching is that first of all the right of the country to control its borders must be respected. The right of the person to leave a particular country if staying in that country puts himself and his family in danger or puts them in strained economic circumstances etcetera that needs to be respected as well. But it does not necessarily follow that that person can then choose whichever country he wishes to come to and come to that country under whatever circumstances he desires.
