Mornings on the Mall

Monday, June 26, 2017

Hosts: Mary Walter and Tom Rogan

5am – A/B/C Should politicians have the right to bar non-constituents from town halls? Maxine Waters bars Trump supporters from town hall meeting Supporters of President Trump were hoping to be a part of Maxine Waters’ town hall meeting in Gardena on Saturday, but they were barred from entering the building. The Trump supporters received tickets for the event, but were treated as “second class citizens” because they supposedly did not live in her district. Video from outside the venue shows about 50 Trump supporters waving American flags and Trump banners and chanting, “Let us in!” as they noted that Waters doesn’t live in her own district, either. Police blocked the doors and prevented them from entering. The non-constituents were identified with yellow wrist bands.

5am – D  CIA director says leaks are on the rise, cites “worship” of leakers like Snowden (CBS) CIA Director Mike Pompeo says he thinks disclosure of America’s secret intelligence is on the rise, fueled partly by the “worship” of leakers like Edward Snowden. “In some ways, I do think it’s accelerated,” the former Kansas congressman told MSNBC in an interview that aired Saturday. “I think there is a phenomenon, the worship of Edward Snowden, and those who steal American secrets for the purpose of self-aggrandizement or money or for whatever their motivation may be, does seem to be on the increase.” Pompeo said the United States needs to redouble its efforts to stem leaks of classified information. “It’s tough,” Pompeo said. “You now have not only nation states trying to steal our stuff, but non-state, hostile intelligence services, well-funded — folks like WikiLeaks, out there trying to steal American secrets for the sole purpose of undermining the United States and democracy.” Besides Snowden, who leaked documents revealing extensive U.S. government surveillance, WikiLeaks recently released nearly 8,000 documents that it says reveal secrets about the CIA’s cyber-espionage tools for breaking into computers. WikiLeaks previously published 250,000 State Department cables and embarrassed the U.S. military with hundreds of thousands of logs from Iraq and Afghanistan.

5am– E     Chicago Woman Asked To Leave LGBT March Because Of Jewish Flag (CBS) A Jewish woman said she was asked to leave the Chicago Dyke March for displaying a rainbow flag with a Jewish Star of David on it. Jewish people celebrating Saturday’s march in Chicago were reportedly told not to display Star of David flags, as others found them “offensive.” The flag was banned from the Dyke March, which is an annual celebration in the city. Several people carrying a flag with a Jewish Star on it were removed from the march because, according to a member of the Dyke March collective, their presence “made people feel unsafe,” Windy City Times reports. Sunday afternoon, the Chicago Dyke March released a statement on Twitter addressing why they asked some to leave. It said, in part: “The Chicago Dyke March Collective is explicitly not anti-Semitic, we are anti-Zionist. The Chicago Dyke March Collective supports the liberation of Palestine and all oppressed people everywhere,” the statement said. “This decision was made after they repeatedly expressed support for Zionism during conversations with Chicago Dyke Mark Collective members.”

6am – A/B/C Professor fired after defending blacks-only event to Fox News. (Washington Post) Should She have been fired? Earlier this month, political commentator Lisa Durden gave a fiery interview with Tucker Carlson on Fox News, defending a Black Lives Matter chapter’s decision to host a Memorial Day event exclusively for black people. “Boo-hoo-hoo,” Lisa Durden, who is also an adjunct professor at Essex County College in Newark, said in the June 6 television appearance. “You white people are angry because you couldn’t use your ‘white privilege’ card to get invited to the Black Lives Matter’s all-black Memorial Day celebration.” In the heated exchange, Carlson responded by calling her “hostile and separatist and crazy.” “You’re demented actually,” he said. “You’re sick and what you’re saying is disgusting and if you were a Nazi I would say the same thing to you.” Durden’s remarks spurred both criticism and praise on social media. But what happened less than 48 hours later prompted an even stronger reaction. On June 8, with about a week left of her summer session of teaching, Durden’s employers at Essex County College suspended her. About two weeks later, Durden was fired from the community college.

6am – D/E INTERVIEW – MATTHEW FOLDI – founder of Students for Free Expression

Topic : Free Speech on college campuses

  • The Wisconsin State Assembly approved a free speech bill Wednesday night that requires the University of Wisconsin system to discipline students who regularly interrupt speakers. The bill was prompted by dozens of free speech incidents that have swept across college campuses around the country.
  • Democratic California Sen. Dianne Feinstein defended the University of California, Berkeley at a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing Tuesday, and suggested colleges shouldn’t have to accommodate controversial speakers.

6am – F The TSA is going to look through your books but promises not to notice what you’re reading The TSA began a new screening policy for paper products at airport checkpoints in Missouri last month, and now the agency’s branch in Sacramento, California, is testing out more invasive searches for books and food items. In the new system, passengers are required to take all reading material and food out of their carry-on luggage and place it in a separate bin. TSA screeners can “fan” through travelers’ books to see if anything is hidden in the pages, but agency officials insist they will not pay attention to the content. Critics have long argued passengers selected for extra screening are not chosen as randomly as the TSA claims, and book content — particularly of a political or religious nature — could re-ignite that debate.

7am – A INTERVIEW – JOE DIGENOVA – Legal Analyst & Fmr. U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia

Topic: Trump Dossier

  • A secretive Washington firm that commissioned the dubious intelligence dossier on Donald Trump is stonewalling congressional investigators trying to learn more about its connections to the Democratic Party.
  • The Senate Judiciary Committee earlier this month threatened to subpoena the firm, Fusion GPS, after it refused to answer questions and provide records to the panel identifying who financed the error-ridden dossier, which was circulated during the election and has sparked much of the Russia scandal now engulfing the White House.

7am-B No In-State Tuition for Arizona DREAMers, Court Rules (Breitbart) An appellate court in Arizona ruled that DREAMers cannot receive in-state tuition. Each state can determine whether it can give these tax-supported benefits, the court held.

Under the ruling, illegal immigrants that have Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status may not pay the in-state tuition rate. “The decision is key because in-state tuition is yet another benefit that acts as a magnet for illegal aliens choosing to make the reckless and irresponsible decision to bring their children illegally across our sovereign borders,” Immigration Reform Law Institute’s executive director and general counsel, Dale Wilcox told Breitbart Texas. Supreme Court: Immigrants Who Lie to Feds to Become Citizens May Lose Citizenship (Breitbart)  The Supreme Court on Thursday held that federal law authorizes courts to strip immigrant citizens of their U.S. citizenship if they obtained it as a result of making false statements to the federal government.

Federal law found at 18 U.S.C. § 1425(a) makes it a crime to “knowingly procur[e], contrary to law, the naturalization of any person” to become a U.S. citizen. (“Naturalization” is the legal term for becoming a citizen.) Moreover, a second federal statute, 8 U.S.C. § 1451(e) adds that a foreigner who obtains U.S. citizenship through such a violation will lose that newly granted citizenship.

7am-C Heller won’t back Senate GOP health care bill (CNN) Dean Heller on Friday became the latest Senate Republican to say he opposes the current GOP health care bill.

“It’s simply not the answer,” the Nevada Republican said at a news conference alongside Gov. Brian Sandoval in Las Vegas. “And I’m announcing today that in this form, I simply will not support it.”

7am – D INTERVIEW – TOMMY BINION – director of congressional and executive relations for The Heritage Foundation

Topic : Healthcare

  • In a Facebook posting, Obama said Republican replacement health care plans “rushed through” the GOP-run House and Senate “would raise costs, reduce coverage, roll back protections, and ruin Medicaid as we know it.” He added that “small tweaks over the course of the next couple weeks, under the guise of making these bills easier to stomach, cannot change the fundamental meanness at the core of this legislation.”
  • Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia told “Face the Nation” on Sunday that he’s willing to negotiate on the “repair” of the Affordable Care Act, but not a total repeal

7am – E  ISIS tweets to poison food in Western countries

8am  A/B/C–  Are children’s sports schedules out of control? A 9-year-old youth football player gets a college scholarship offer? Yep, you bet New Florida Atlantic coach Lane Kiffin recently offered rising eighth grader Kaden Martin, son of former Tennessee QB Tee Martin, now offensive coordinator at Southern California. Martin’s son graduates in 2022. A 9-year-old in Los Angeles, Havon Finney Jr., recently received an offer from the University of Nevada. The news was reported by his trainer, Mike Evans, a former Louisville football player.

8am – D Trump and Modi set for first, high-stakes meeting (CNBC) In their first face-to-face meeting, President Donald Trump and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi will attempt to build trust and a rapport in what some are calling a “bromance in the making.” If they don’t, billions of dollars could be a stake. When Modi meets Trump on Monday at the White House for the first time, a big elephant will be in the room: immigration and the hotly contested H-1B program.

8am – E  Hacker collective Anonymous releases video claiming that NASA is on the verge of announcing alien life (Daily Mail) The hacker collective Anonymous has released a video repeating others’ claims that NASA is on the verge of announcing contact with alien life. The video, released Tuesday on an unofficial YouTube channel claiming to be affiliated with Anonymous, repeats the text of three articles from the conspiracy website Ancient-Code.com. The video, which runs with advertising, has garnered over half a million views. Recent discoveries both in our solar system and beyond have in fact boosted the hopes of those who long for first contact with alien life.
