UPDATE: As of 8:50AM, all lanes have been re-opened on the inner loop of the Beltway. Delays are still expected throughout the morning rush hour.

ALEXANDRIA — (WMAL) One person has died as the result of two back-to-back crashes on the inner loop of the Capital Beltway at the start of Monday’s morning rush hour.
The first crash involved two vehicles on the inner loop near Van Dorn Street in Alexandria at around 5 am, A short time later, a pedestrian was struck and killed at the same spot.
By the time police responded, thousands of commuters had already jammed the Beltway before exit ramps could be closed, leaving a nine-mile backup on the interstate.
Virginia State Police investigators kept the crash scene closed as they conducted a crash reconstruction. Traffic on the outer loop was also impacted by rubber-necking commuters eager for a look at the crash scene.
There is no further word available on other injuries in either crash. .
