WASHINGTON — (WMAL) The National Park Service is seeking public comment on its plans to renovate the Lincoln Memorial.
It is looking to enhance the user experience and open up the the bottom portion that has been previously closed off to the public.
“It’s a very Cathedral-like space,” said Catherine Dewey, Chief of Resource Management for NPS.
People can comment on the website: parkplanning.nps.gov/LincolnMemorialRehab
“If they would like to make a suggestion or make a comment, we will collect all of that information,” said Dewey.
The comment period opened on June 7 and will run through July 10.
Some of the proposed plans include cleaning the exterior of the memorial and making repairs to the brick and marble.
A museum store would be moved to the lower level and expanded. Also, new bathrooms would be put in to improve the visitor experience.
The goal is to rehabilitate the memorial before its centennial in 2022.
