WASHINGTON — (WMAL) DC planted 8,200 trees around the city this planting season. And now they need help watering them.

DC Mayor Muriel Bowser announced a new app Monday to encourage residents to help care for local trees.

The app, DC Tree Watering App, allows users to locate trees in need of watering, tag trees they have watered, and upload photos of themselves with the trees.

“We are committed to embracing smart technology across city government, and with the launch of the new DC Tree Watering App we are encouraging all District residents to help support our urban forestry,” Bowser said in a statement. “This past planting season, as part of DC’s commitment to protecting and enhancing the environment, we planted 8,200 new trees throughout the city. Now, we want to see them flourish and we invite everyone to help. Watering is the easiest and most affordable way for residents to help, and this app will allow us to coordinate our efforts.”

DC cares for 215,000 trees. With the addition of the new trees, DC’s urban tree canopy coverage has reached 38.7 percent.

The announcement is part of a multi-week campaign called Back to Basics DC, which aims to recognize the daily work that keeps DC functioning.
