Listen as Larry spoke with Rep. Andy Harris regarding the House voting in favor of AHCA.
During the interview, Rep. Harris addressed concerns regarding pre-existing conditions:
O’Connor: So, I’m trying to figure out what exactly this was that just got passed. Let me explain what I think it is and you tell me where I’m wrong. States right now can look for a waiver from Obamacare’s requirement that ensures charged people the same amount of coverage whether they have a pre-existing condition or not. Right now everyone pays the same under Obamacare, whether you have a pre-existing condition or not.
Rep. Harris: We use the term pre-existing condition a little incorrectly. Pre-existing condition only applies to people who don’t buy insurance until they are sick and then buy it with a pre-existing condition.
O’Connor: So in other words, people who are defying the law right now that say you must have health insurance, then when they get sick they say,’ hey, I want health insurance.’
Rep. Harris: That’s what pre-existing conditions really apply to. What most people confuse it with is what’s called medical underwriting. Let’s say you have a condition, can you be charged more? The answer is always no because we have guaranteed [inaudible]. As long as you maintain coverage you cannot be changed more.
