American Eagle Foundation Holds Campaign to Name Baby Eagles

WASHINGTON — The public has the chance to submit name ideas for two baby American eagles at the National Arboretum through April 18th.

This is the third year of the #NameTheNestlings program, which began when the “First Family” of eagles at the Arboretum started having children.

But how do you fairly judge hundreds or possibly thousands of submissions from all over the world?

Al Cecere, Presdient of the American Eagle Foundation has a fittingly American solution:

“So many names are submitted that we sort of democratically pick all the names that have been suggested more than others,”

From there the top five names will go through a public vote starting on April 24th.

Millions of people worldwide have kept up with the eagles and their parents for the last two years through a 24/7 webcam feed at dceaglecam.org.

Cecere says it’s all about education:

“These eagle nest cams are extremely popular and we’ve had millions of views on this and it goes a long way in educating the public,” he said.

If you want to submit a name, choose two names for these eaglets and post them on social media (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter) using these two hashtags: #NameTheNestlings & #DCEagleCam.
