WASHINGTON – The National Weather Service confirmed there were two E-F 0 tornadoes in the D.C. metro area yesterday.

One touched down in Herndon with winds of 60 to 70 mph, a path length of 3/4 of a mile and a maximum width of 75 feet.

The other tornado was at Joint Base Anacostia. That one also had a maximum width of 75 feet and a path length of one mile.

Both knocked trees down and left many people without power.

With those two tornadoes confirmed, the NWS is now looking into whether there were any additional touchdowns in Fauquier or Culpeper counties.

“You’re looking at the damage to determine whether or not it was a tornado or straight line wind damage, which would be associate with a microburst, and that’s basically an area of winds that come down with a thunderstorm itself,” said NWS meteorologist Brian Lasorsa.

While tornadoes aren’t common in this area, Lasorsa said they aren’t unheard of, especially at this time of year when cold and warm air clash.
