One Woman Killed, Three Others Injured in MoCo Townhouse Fire

GAITHERSBURG, MD — (WMAL) A woman was killed, three persons were injured and as many as 20 people lost their homes in a towhouse fire in Gaothersburg Sunday night.

Firefighters were called to the Brighton West condomuniums on West Side Drive at around 8 pe Sunday evening for the report of a house fire in a middle unit of a row of townhomes.

Montgomery County fire spokesman Pete Piringer says the fire spread to adjoining units, and residents of several homes were evacuated. The flames were subdued quickly, but firefighters were told one resident of the unit where the fire started was still missing.

Firefighters condicted a search and soon found one victim in an upstairs bedroom who had already succumbed to the smoke and flames.

Three other residents were taken to hospitals with non-life threatening injuries. As many as 20 other residents will have to be relocated after their homes were also damaged in the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. The name of the victim killed in the fire has not been released.
