WOODBRIDGE, VA — (WMAL) The Prince William County Board of County Supervisors will formally receive a proposal Tuesday night for a new baseball stadium to be built at Potomac Town Center in Woodbridge. The stadium would be the new home of the Potomac Nationals, the Class A affiliate of the Washington Nationals.
The P-Nats have been told by Major League Baseball that they have to get a new home, or the team will move. The existing stadium, Pfitzner Stadium, is old, run down and too small with antiquated facilities.
The plan being presented to the Board would have the county build the stadium, but the team would be responsible for paying all debt and upkeep. Prince William County would have to pay for some transportation improvements and site preparation work.
“Things like baseball stadiums are always going to generate a lot of community interest, both with supporters and those who oppose the idea” says Supervisor Martin Nohe. “I think right now, the board is looking for public feedback.”
Nohe describes himself as a Potomac Nationals fan.
“Frankly, I can afford to take my four kids to a Potomac Nationals game. We can buy the tickets, we can get the popcorn and the hot dogs and the sodes, and I don’t have to break the bank to do it,” he says.
Supervisors will make the plan public Tuesday night, then hold public hearings in the coming weeks to get input from residents. A final decision on whether to move forward with the proposal will likely come later this spring.
