Carryn Owen’s choice to accept the President’s invitation to attend his address to congress is not a news story meant for social comment or political opinion from those on the outside. She is a widow who fully understood the man her husband was and accepted the warrior he was meant to be–an acceptance that fundamentally has to include the very real outcome that he may come home wrapped in our flag. Even so, she now has to carry on as a mother, provider, daughter, sister and friend with the strength and dignity that she expects of herself because she knows that is what her husband would have expected of her. Her path of grief is hers and hers only and can include accepting acknowledgment and honor from our Commander in Chief and those who lead our great nation. It is extremely challenging to navigate your own personal loss when you are forced to reconcile it as a very public, national tragedy. Carryn Owens epitomized grace and strength on Tuesday night. She has set the tone by which she will honor her husband and his legacy for the rest of her life.
