WASHINGTON — (WMAL) DC has made it to the final three Wednesday morning in a bid to host the 2022 Gay Games.
The other cities in the running to host the week-long Olympic-like celebration are Guadalajara and Hong Kong.
Hosting the Gay Games could bring up to $150 million into the District. 15,000 participants and 80,000 spectators are expected to come to the event, which would help hotels during the slow summer season.
The Gay Games run for one week every four years and consist of 36 games ranging from classic Olympic sports such as swimming to less conventional sports such as dogdeball. It is considered one the of the largest celebrations in the LGBTQ community.
The Federation of Gay Games committee will be coming to DC in May for a site visit, and then the three finalists will meet in Paris, where the 2018 games are being held, in October for a final vote.
