WASHINGTON — (WMAL) Some people love him, and others hate President Donald Trump, but his wine seems to have bipartisan support.
If you’re looking for Trump wine, good luck finding it in the D.C. metro area. Local stores are out of stock of the wines made at the Charlottesville winery that’s run by the president’s son Eric Trump.
“Shortly after Mr. Trump was nominated earlier last year and up until the election, those sales were brisk. In fact we sold all the way through all of the wine that we had in stock,” said Ed Hooper with Total Wine and More.
Hooper said their supplier is also out of Trump wine. Total Wine’s website said they expect to be back in stock sometime in March.
Wegmans grocery stores in Virginia are also out of the five Trump wines they keep on their shelves. The company put out a statement saying their supplier expects to have more in three to four weeks. They will continue to sell the wines, despite some people boycotting the popular grocery chain for that decision.
“Our role as a retailer is to offer choice to our customers. For various reasons, we are sometimes asked to stop selling a product. Our response is
always the same, no matter the product: How a product performs is our single measure for what stays on our shelves and what goes,” the statement said.
The statement advised anyone opposed to Wegmans selling Trump wine to not buy it.
The Wine Cabinet in Reston had a few bottles left Thursday afternoon from a small shipment it got in last week.
“We ran out though before the inauguration. There was quite a run on the wines, both because people wanted to celebrate, and because people wanted to play a joke, and maybe they just wanted to have a little fun with it,” said Mike Mackie who is one of the partners with the Wine Cabinet
Mackie said Virginia wineries generally don’t produce large quantities of wine. He expects to get more Trump wine this spring when the new vintage comes out.
The name associated with luxury, sells wine for surprisingly reasonable prices. The least expensive Trump wine Total wine sells is the Trump Rose for $12 and the most expensive includes Trump New World Red for $30.
