BETHESDA — (WMAL) A pair of crashes shut down two major D.C. commuter routes Thursday morning.

Shortly before 1 am, a vehicle flipped over and caught fire on the Clara Barton Parkway near the Glen Echo Turnaround, killing one of the people inside. Another passenger was able to crawl out of the wreckage and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The Clara Barton was closed between Glen Echo and the Chain Bridge for several hours as the crash investigation took place. It reopened shortly after 6 am.

As that crash was being investigated, several vehicles became involved in a crash shortly before 6 am on southbound DC 295 near Nannie Helen Burroughs Avenue in NE, blocking all lanes there. 10 people were injured in that crash, which included one vehicle coming to rest on top of another.

Of those transported to hospitals, one victim had life-threatening injuries, one with serious non-life threatening injuries and eight others with minor injuries.

The lanes reopened at 7 am, but backups by that point stretched more than six miles.
