WASHINGTON — (WMAL) You don’t need to eat a turkey to have a Thanksgiving Feast.
The Nation’s oldest vegetarian society, the Vegetarian Society of D.C., is hosting their annual Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday. The Vegetarian Society of D.C. is a not-for-profit organization that promotes a plant based diet through education.
The dinner will be from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature only a plant-based menu that includes a variety of salads, vegetables, and stuffed pumpkin. Aside from the dinner, the event will include guest speaker Dr. Neil Bernard who is an activist in the vegan community.
While over 300 people will be in attendance of the dinner, not all of them are practicing vegetarians. David Banks, a board member for the vegetarian Society of D.C., says that there will be “some folks who will come to the function that have never had an all vegan meal, and we have other people who have never tasted meat.”
Although the Vegetarian Society of D.C. has reached capacity for their Thanksgiving dinner, they hold events all throughout the year to educate people interested in turning to a plant based diet.
