WASHINGTON –(WMAL) D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser has chosen Antwan Wilson to be the next leader of D.C. Public Schools.
The search began in July to replace outgoing Chancellor Kaya Henderson who led the school district for more than 5 years.
Henderson built a reputation as a national leader in urban education reform.
However, D.C. schools still struggle with an achievement gap.
Wilson is currently the superintendent of the Oakland Unified School District in California and has spent more than 20 years in education.
Wilson has also worked as a teacher, principal, and superintendent in other districts including Denver and Wichita.
“The tremendous opportunity to make an opportunity to make a difference for the young people here, can have a tremendous impact on young people across the country, ” said Antwan Wilson at a press conference Tuesday morning.
Wilson has an educational philosophy that involves academic, social, and emotional learning.
“I believe that it’s extremely important that schools are places that educate young people and prepare and prepare them for success. Not just academic success but success as people,” said Wilson.
Mayor Bowser explained why she picked a leader from outside of the area.
“Certainly we have outstanding educators and leaders in DCPS. But my job when I am looking at an appointment is look at the public school system, the agency, look at the kids, look at the needs of the city and make the best choice for the leader who I think can partner with me to carry out my vision. And that is Antwan,” said Mayor Bowser.
Wilson was asked if he would continue past policies enforced by previous school chancellors which evaluated teachers based on test scores.
“My experience has been that educators throughout the system appreciate evaluation, observation, and feedback. And what I will say is this: I look forward to spending time with our teachers, with the leadership team and educators here to understand where we can get better in that regard, in terms of the current system, and what types of things we have to double down on,” Wilson said. “I look forward to having that conversation internally.”
The contract length is for two years and Wilson will be paid a base salary of $280,000 per year.
Wilson says he will have his children attend public schools.
If the city council confirms him as the next school chancellor, he will start in the job in February.
