WASHINGTON — (WMAL) All 4000-series railcars are being removed from the tracks due to a potential safety threat.

Metro railcar engineers are concerned that the cars’ ATC system, which tells the operator how fast or slow to go, may fail without notice and send out the wrong speed commands.

“Today’s action is being taken in an abundance of caution and, while we believe that the risk is small, it is a risk I am unwilling to take,” Metro General manager and CEO Paul Wiedefeld said in a statement. “Everything we do here is going to put safety first, no matter what.”

The 400-series cars are not a risk if they are placed in the center of trains, and Metro may consider still using them as railcars that are not used to monitor speed.
