5am – A/B/C Alexandria City Council votes to rename Jefferson Davis Highway. WASHINGTON — In a unanimous vote Saturday, the Alexandria City Council has decided to change the name of Jefferson Davis Highway, a roadway named for Jefferson Davis, the president of the Confederacy. “I could honestly say, personally, raise my taxes to pay for it, to satisfy my parents, my grandparents,” Councilman Willie F. Bailey Sr. said. The council discussed the possibility of changing the name to Patrick Henry but tabled the discussion for later.  An advisory committee did not recommend name changes for all the streets in Alexandria named after Confederate soldiers but has now opened the door for neighbors who want a street change to petition for one. The council on Saturday also voted in favor of asking the Virginia General Assembly for permission to move the Appomattox statue, a statue of a Confederate soldier that currently stands in Old Town, at South Washington and Prince streets.

5am – D         Emmys Highlights

5am – E         Latest News On The Three Terror Attacks Over The Weekend:

  • Minnesota mall attacker referenced Allah before stabbing rampage, police chief says. (Fox News) — ISIS claimed responsibility after a knife-wielding man injured eight people at a mall in central Minnesota Saturday evening, a bloody rampage during which he reportedly asked at least one victim whether they were Muslim and referenced Allah. St. Cloud Police Chief William Blair Anderson said the suspect, whom he did not identify, was shot and killed by an off-duty police officer from another jurisdiction. Five of the eight victims had been treated and released from a local hospital and all were expected to survive their injuries. ISIS-related media on Sunday morning claimed responsibility for the attack, issuing a statement via a source. “The executor of the stabbing attacks in Minnesota yesterday was a soldier of the Islamic State and carried out the operation in response to calls to target the citizens of countries belonging to the crusader coalition,” the statement said. Authorities didn’t identify the attacker, but the Star Tribune of Minneapolis said the man’s father identified him as Dahir A. Adan, 22. Speaking to the newspaper through an interpreter, Ahmed Adan, whose family is Somali, said his son was born in Africa and had lived in the U.S. for 15 years.
  • NYC EXPLOSION: ‘Number of individuals’ in custody after authorities stop ‘vehicle of interest’ in Chelsea bombing. (Fox News) — Federal authorities conducted a traffic stop of a “vehicle of interest” in the Chelsea bombing Sunday night in Brooklyn. A law enforcement source told Fox News that a “number of individuals” who are possibly connected to the explosion were taken into custody. Law enforcement officials told the Associated Press that at least 5 men were being questioned. The two officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk about an ongoing investigation. The FBI said in a statement that no one had been charged with any crime and the investigation was ongoing. New York state Sen. Marty Golden posted an Instagram photo, saying the FBI took “several individuals” into custody on the Belt Parkway underneath the Verrazano Bridge at around 8:40 p.m.
  • NEW JERSEY: FBI: Multiple IEDs found in package at New Jersey train station. Elizabeth, New Jersey (CNN)A backpack containing multiple bombs was found Sunday night near an Elizabeth, New Jersey, train station, according to the FBI and the city’s mayor. The backpack had up to five devices, Elizabeth Mayor Chris Bollwage said. It was found in a wastebasket, outside a neighborhood pub and located about 500 feet from a train trestle. No one was injured. Around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, two men found the backpack and thought it might contain something valuable. They alerted police when they saw wires and a pipe, the mayor said. No cell phones or electronic timing devices were found on the devices, Bollwage said.
  • Clinton condemns what she calls “apparent terrorist attacks.” WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. –  Hillary Clinton on Sunday condemned what she described as “apparent terrorist attacks” in Minnesota, New Jersey and New York. The Democratic presidential candidate made the statement a day after a bomb rocked the Chelsea district in New York City, a pipe bomb exploded in a New Jersey seaside community and a stabbing attack unfolded at a Minnesota mall. Officials in New York and New Jersey said Sunday they were still investigating who was behind the explosions and what the motivation was, while the Minnesota attack was being investigated as a possible act of terrorism. Clinton stressed that investigations were still underway, saying: “Law enforcement officials are working to identify who was behind the attacks in New York and New Jersey and we should give them the support they need to finish the job and bring those responsible to justice – we will not rest until that happens.” On the attack in St. Cloud, Minnesota, the former Secretary of State noted that the Islamic State group had claimed responsibility and added, “this should steel our resolve to protect our country and defeat ISIS and other terrorist groups.” Clinton noted her plans to take on the Islamic State group, which include increased intelligence and efforts to better combat propaganda and recruitment online.

6am – A/B/C Obama Sees ‘Personal Insult’ if Blacks Don’t Rally for Hillary Clinton. (NY Times) — With Democratic leaders increasingly worried about a lack of passion for Hillary Clinton among young black voters, President Obama is rolling out a new and more personal campaign message: “It’s about me.” The president told African-Americans this weekend he would consider it a “personal insult” if they did not vote for Mrs. Clinton, implicitly putting his name on the line as his former secretary of state struggles to replicate the coalition that delivered him victories in 2008 and 2012. “My name may not be on the ballot, but our progress is on the ballot,” Mr. Obama said on Saturday night at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation gala dinner in Washington, where Mrs. Clinton also spoke. “Tolerance is on the ballot. Democracy is on the ballot. Justice is on the ballot.”

6am – E         Clinton Campaign, Blumenthal Fight Back Against Accusations Of Spreading ‘birth Rumor.’ The Hillary Clinton campaign moved Saturday to further distance itself from the re-ignited controversy about President Obama’s birthplace and long-time Clinton confidant Sidney Blumenthal, saying neither Clinton nor the 2008 campaign “ever” questioned the president’s citizenship. Donald Trump, Clinton’s Republican presidential rival, revived the so-called “birther” issue earlier this week when he declined to say definitively whether Obama is a U.S. citizen. The controversy gained momentum Friday when former McClatchy D.C. bureau chief James Asher tweeted that Blumenthal “told me in person” that Obama was born in Kenya.

Watkins Mill High School football players took a knee during last week’s game as well. Players from one of their rival teams, Damascus High School, were among the team’s critics.
