OLNEY, Md. – (WMAL) A portion of Georgia Avenue in Montgomery County headed into Olney is now dedicated to Officer Noah Leotta, just two weeks prior to the law named after him going into effect.

At a ceremony Tuesday unveiling a roadside sign bearing Leotta’s name and a warning of “don’t drink and drive,” Noah’s father Rich reflected on the ten-month journey from grief to action to change.

“We can’t being Noah back,” Leota said, “but we can make a difference and make sure other people don’t have to suffer what we have.”

Noah’s Law, set to go into effect October 1, requires all convicted drunk drivers in Maryland to install ignition interlock devices. Officials said it represents the toughest interlock law in the country.

“Even in death, he will continue to save lives,” Maryland Governor Larry Hogan said. “We have faith knowing that Noah will never be forgotten.”

Hogan and Police Chief Tom Manger were both quick to point out the symbolism of a sign placed on the main road headed into Olney – the town where Leotta grew up, and up the road from his home police station.

“I’m glad that people will be reminded of his name as a tribute and a reminder of his legacy every day they travel up and down Georgia Avenue,” Manger said. “Because of the sacrifice he made, he’ll save thousands and thousands of lives in the years to come.”

Rich Leotta thanked a long list of people, but became emotional in turning to Manger.

“I’d like to thank Chief Manger…for everything. And all of our men and women in blue,” Leotta said.

“October 1, 2016, Noah’s on patrol.”
