WASHINGTON — (CNN) Fort Campbell officials said a soldier was arrested after a shooting on the post near the Campbell Army Airfield Thursday.
Officials said shots were heard and the gates were secured immediately.
According to a news release, the soldier allegedly entered Hangar 8 on the airfield around 11:30 a.m. and fired two shots.
Fort Campbell law enforcement responded immediately.
The shooter allegedly fled the hangar in his personal vehicle and law enforcement pursued.
During the pursuit, officials said the soldier hit another vehicle but was able to make it to his on-post residence.
He then attempted to flee on foot, but was subdued and taken into custody.
Officers searched the soldier’s vehicle and found more weapons and ammunition.
Fort Campbell officials identified the shooter as a 101st Airborne Division soldier.
His name has not yet been released.
According to the post’s Facebook page, the post is secure and there is no danger to the post community.
Officials said the gates to the post were open.
There were no injuries.
The incident lasted about 30 minutes.
“The potential for tragedy was there, but due to the rapid response and readiness of everyone involved, a tragedy was successfully averted,” Brig. Gen. Scott E. Brower, 101st Airborne Division, said in a release.
Fort Campbell said the motive for the shooting is unknown and the investigation is ongoing.
