5am – A/B/C   INTERVIEW — STEVE MOORE — Economist, Trump advisor and author of new book “Fueling Freedom: Exposing the Mad War on Energy”

  • Trump Outlines Economic Plan in Detroit. Trump unveils economic plan to ‘jump-start’ US. Republican party nominee Donald Trump has said he would slash taxes, block onerous financial regulations and unleash the energy sector as he pledged to “jump-start America” with a new economic plan if elected United States president. Separately, as the White House nominee attempted to reset his campaign, dozens of top Republican security officials published a joint letter in The New York Times warning he would be “the most reckless president in American history.”  The property tycoon and former reality TV star unveiled his proposals in the economically-depressed city of Detroit as he attempted to focus on policies that drew a sharp contrast with rival Hillary Clinton. “We are in a competition with the world, and I want America to win,” Trump told an audience at the Detroit Economic Club, as he highlighted “disastrous” policies that he said have snuffed out US jobs in the nearly eight years of Barack Obama’s presidency. “I want to jump-start America. It can be done, and it won’t even be that hard,” he said.
  • Sen. Susan Collins joins chorus of Republicans who decline to support Trump.
  • Trump fundraising sets off Clinton camp alarms.

5am – D         Olympics Update:

  • Olympics: Hijab-wearing American fencer says she doesn’t feel safe in America UPDATE: She’s eliminated. New Jersey Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad is the first hijab-wearing athlete to compete on behalf of the United States of America. She will compete in Rio in the fencing competition and has become a bit of a cause célèbre for the mainstream media and NBC Sports as they have attempted to make her the poster child for the American team. That means she is giving a whole lot of interviews and through those interactions with the press, we’re learning more and more about her and what kind of ambassador she is for America. How good is she at singing the praises of the land of the free which allows her the protection and religious freedom to practice as she wishes and have the honor to represent our nation abroad?
  • Why is “cupping” attracting Olympic athletes like Michael Phelps?  If 19-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps does it for his health, then it’s gotta be good, right? That’s what many are wondering after spotting cupping marks — those purplish circles — on the swimmer’s upper body poolside at the 2016 Olympics in Rio this week. Phelps also posted a shot of himself on Instagram being cupped last year. But doctors who specialize in both mainstream and alternative medicine say when it comes to the science behind the ancient Chinese practice, the answers are vague. Dr. Adam Perlman, executive director for Duke Integrative Medicine, told CBS News, “Cupping has probably been around as long as traditional Chinese medicine has been around — a couple thousand years.”
  • Michael Phelps was hilariously unfazed as an opponent danced in front of him before a race. (Business Insider) — Michael Phelps advanced to the 200m butterfly Olympic final on Monday night from Rio, but the real drama of the evening came in the dressing room during a rare face-off between Phelps and South African swimmer Chad Le Clos. Le Clos, remember, narrowly beat Phelps for the gold medal in the same event at the London Olympics in 2012. As the two waited in the dressing room prior to their semifinal on Monday night, LeClos started shadow-boxing, jumping in place, and making a small scene. Phelps, sitting right next to him, gave him an absolute death stare.

5am – E         Critter News:

  • 2 people bitten by fox in Fairfax County. (Fox 5) — SPRINGFIELD, Va. – Fox attacks in Fairfax County have residents on edge after two people were bitten near their homes. The incidents happened twice on Monday in a span of three hours in Springfield. The first attack happened in the 8600 block of Kenilworth Drive when an 81-year-old woman was in her front yard around 10:30 a.m. “I was coming around, I felt something grab me around the ankle,” said the woman. “I looked down and there was this fox. Then I started screaming and he let go. But he kept lunging at me. I was terrified because he kept lunging and I picked up the chair up there and put it in front of me.” She ended up going to the hospital for treatment. Just before 2 p.m. just about a half mile away, an 84-year-old man was bitten by a fox while mowing his lawn in the 5600 block of Ventnor Lane. He also went to the hospital to treat the bite.
  • Massive swarm of bees escapes in Walmart parking lot, 3 hospitalized. (Fox News) — Three people were recovering in a hospital Sunday after thousands of bees escaped in a hive exchange gone wrong in Oklahoma City. Officials tell Fox 25 a person was selling three hives, each containing more than 10,000 bees, when one was dropped in a Walmart Neighborhood Market parking lot Saturday morning. Thousands of bees swarmed into the air and fire crews rushed to spray water in the area and distract the bees from people nearby. A call for help was sent on the Central Oklahoma Beekeepers Association Facebook page and Darell Baker was the first beekeeper to arrive. “I messaged back and said I can be here, there’s actually two others that came with us when we arrived there were three hives in the back of a Dodge truck,” Baker said, “If bees sting, there’s a pheromone that bees put off to come and help.” The Walmart was evacuated for several hours while first responders and beekeepers worked together to keep people safe, and save as many bees as possible.

6am – A/B     GAO: More data needed on costs and benefits of telework. The benefits of telework are more fully understood than the costs, but both could use more data to support them, according to a Government Accountability Office report released Aug. 1. From April 2015 to July 2016, GAO audited telework programs at six agencies — the Agriculture Department, Environmental Protection Agency, Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., General Services Administration, Merit Systems Protection Board and Transportation Department. The agencies said telework benefits included fewer employee absences, improved work/life balance, better recruitment and retention, and continuity of operations. However, GAO said the agencies had little data to support the benefits or costs associated with their telework programs. Telework is becoming an increasingly popular option among agencies. According to the Office of Personnel Management’s 2014 annual report, the number of federal employees eligible to telework in 2013 increased nearly 50 percent to more than 1 million employees. But the cost savings are not fully understood.

6am – C         Muslim ‘Clock Boy’ is suing his school for accusing him of bringing bomb to class. The family of the teenager that was arrested and accused of bringing a homemade bomb to class has filed a lawsuit against the school. Ahmed Mohamed, then 13, who brought a ticking clock to his class that was mistaken for a bomb, has accused the school of violating his civil rights in a lawsuit that was filed in Irving, Texas. MacArthur High School suspended the teenager for three days even though they dropped the charge – a possession of a hoax bomb.

6am – D         INTERVIEW — ROBERT THOMSON – Washington Post’s DR. GRIDLOCK

  • In scathing report, FTA blasts Metro track maintenance program
  • SafeTrack: Trains to Single-Track Along Portion of Red Line for Surge 7. Metro’s SafeTrack Surge 7 begins Tuesday and will disrupt the entire Red Line. The latest slowdown of Metro’s 9-month maintenance blitz will be more disruptive than initially planned. Red Line trains will continuously single-track between the Shady Grove and Twinbrook Metro stations starting Tuesday.

6am – E         Snoop Dogg and Martha Stewart are about to get their own cooking show.   The two will co-host “Martha and Snoop’s Dinner Party,” a VH1 cooking show that will feature the two stars preparing a meal for their celebrity friends, the network announced on its website Monday.  “My homegirl Martha and I have a special bond that goes back. We’re gonna be cooking, drinking and having a good time with our exclusive friends. Can’t wait for you to see how we roll together!” Snoop told VH1.com. Stewart said the show will “exemplify” the country’s fascination with dining, celebrity and entertainment.  “I can’t wait to get snoop in the kitchen,” she said on a promo teasing the show that aired on ABC’s ‘Good Morning America.’  “Our new show is rizzle, dizzle for shizzle,” she added, imitating the West Coast slang popularized by Snoop. This will not be the first collaboration between Stewart and Snoop — real name Cordozar Calvin Broadus, Jr. Their on screen connection goes back to at least 2008, when they made multiple dishes including mashed potatoes and holiday brownies on an episode of “Martha Stewart Living.”

7am – A   INTERVIEW – MCKAY COPPINS — Senior political writer, Buzz Feed News and author of the book, THE WILDERNESS.

  • Anti-Trump Republican Launching Independent Presidential Bid. (By McKay Coppins / BuzzFeed News Reporter) — Evan McMullin, a CIA veteran and chief policy director of the House Republican conference, announced Monday that he’s launching an independent presidential bid. “Like millions of Americans, I had hoped this year would bring us better nominees who, despite party differences, could offer compelling visions of a better future,” McMullin wrote in a statement on his campaign website. “Instead, we have been left with two candidates who are fundamentally unfit for the profound responsibilities they seek.” BuzzFeed News first reported McMullin’s plans Monday morning.

7am – B/C   INTERVIEW – STEVE KASTENBAUM — Correspondent in RIO covering the Olympics

  • 2016 Rio Olympics results: USA swimming, diving win medals on Day 3. Day 2 was a good one for the U.S., taking home gold medals in swimming and dominating women’s gymnastics. Day 3 started off slow for the Americans, but the medals started pouring in once swimming started on Monday evening. Long live the King: After talking trash about Russian swimmer Yulia Efimova the night before, American Lilly King backed it up in the pool on Monday. She beat Efimova in the 100m breaststroke to take home the gold medal, and Twitter took notice. Phelps vs. Le Clos: Before their 200m butterfly semifinal, Michael Phelps and Chad le Clos had a bizarre moment. While le Clos danced and shadowboxed in front of Phelps, the American just gave him a straight death stare. Phelps went on to finish second in the semifinal, while le Clos finished third. Mighty Murphy: Ryan Murphy set an Olympic record in winning gold in the 100m backstroke. It was the sixth straight Olympic win by an American in the event.

7am – D/E     NBC’s Al Trautwig apologizes for comments on Simone Biles’ parents. (USA Today) — RIO DE JANEIRO — Al Trautwig, NBC’s gymnastics announcer at the Rio Games, apologized Monday for suggesting that Simone Biles’ parents through adoption are not really her parents. “I regret that I wasn’t more clear in my wording on the air,” he said in a statement emailed by NBC Sports. “I compounded the error on Twitter, which I quickly corrected. To set the record straight, Ron and Nellie are Simone’s parents.” Ron and Nellie Biles adopted Simone and her younger sister, Adria, in 2001. The girls had spent time in foster care as Shanon Biles, their biological mother and Ron’s daughter, struggled with drugs and alcohol. Trautwig referred to Ron and Nellie as Biles’ grandparents on Sunday’s NBC primetime broadcast. When a woman tweeted Trautwig to say that he should call them her parents, he tweeted: “They may be mom and dad but they are NOT her parents.” Trautwig deleted the post but it was preserved by users who retweeted or screen-grabbed it. The hashtag #FireTrautwig gained traction on Twitter.

8am – A/B/C WHAT ABOUT A.M. COFFEE? N.J. bill aims to ban eating, drinking and reading while driving. (NY Daily News) — Sipping coffee while behind the wheel in New Jersey could soon land you in hot water, if a proposed bill is approved. The bill from Assemblyman John Wisniewski would bar motorists from “distracted driving,” defined as “any activity unrelated to the actual operation of a motor vehicle in a manner that interferes with the safe operation of the vehicle.” The loosely worded bill aims to combat texting while driving — already illegal in New Jersey — but also seeks to fine motorists who eat, drink, groom or read behind the wheel, NJ.com reported. Violators would face fines as high as $400 for a first offense and $600 for a second. More transgressions could lead to a 90-day license suspension and driving record points.

8am – D         INTERVIEW — LARRY KUDLOW- CNBC Senior Contributor and host of The Larry KudlowShow on WMAL Saturdays at 7 pm

  • Trump unveils economic plan to ‘jump-start’ US. Republican party nominee Donald Trump has said he would slash taxes, block onerous financial regulations and unleash the energy sector as he pledged to “jump-start America” with a new economic plan if elected United States president.

8am – E         Parents of two Benghazi victims sue Hillary Clinton alleging she is ‘directly responsible’ for deaths of their sons. (Daily Mail) — Hillary Clinton is being sued by the parents of two Americans who were killed in the 2012 Benghazi attack. The lawsuit alleges the former Secretary of State was directly responsible for the deaths of Sean Smith, a State Department communications specialist, and CIA contractor Tyrone Woods, two of four men who died on the night of September 11, 2012. Smith’s mother Patricia Smith and Woods’ father Charles Woods are suing Clinton for wrongful death and negligence, but also for defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress. The suit accuses Clinton of making defamatory statements to the media by saying the plaintiffs were lying when they said that she told them the attack was motivated by an anti-Muslim YouTube video, Mediate reports. In the complaint, Larry Klayman, an attorney for the families, wrote: ‘During her campaign for President, Defendant Clinton has negligently, recklessly, and/or maliciously defamed Plaintiffs by either directly calling them liars, or by strongly implying that they are liars, in order to protect and enhance her public image and intimidate and emotionally harm and silence them not to speak up about the Benghazi attack on at least four separate occasions.’
