Nancy Pelosi: Hillary Clinton Struggles With White Men Because Of “Guns, Gays, And God”

Posted By Tim Hains

On Date July 27, 2016

In an interview with PBS’s Judy Woodruff, Rep. Nancy Pelosi says that the “the G’s” are leading uneducated white men to vote for Donald Trump: “Guns, Gays, and God”

JUDY WOODRUFF: You know that place very well. Right now, Donald Trump is doing much better than Hillary Clinton among white men, and particularly white men who have not attended college. How does Hillary Clinton counter that?

REP. NANCY PELOSI: With an economic agenda to create jobs, good-paying jobs, increasing paychecks.

The economic agenda is what is really — it’s about the economy. You know that statement. It’s not a cliche. It’s a fact. And I think that, so many times, white — non-college-education — educated white males have voted Republican. They voted against their own economic interests because of guns, because of gays, and because of God, the three G’s, God being the woman’s right to choose.

That is softening. Some of those people were never going to be voting Democratic anyway. But I believe that, with the turnout that we expect to have, we will draw some of them in with our message, and enough other people to win the election.

Uber, Lyft and city cabs clash over access to DNC venue

Uber, the ride-hailing app giant, clashed with drivers from Lyft and the city’s cab companies Tuesday over access to the Democratic National Convention’s venue.

Democratic National Convention, Day Two

Cab and Lyft drivers accused Uber of making it difficult to drop off passengers near the Wells Fargo Center, where convention events are held. Uber has an agreement with the Democratic National Committee that granted it an exclusive Uber lounge, where passengers can wait to be picked up, and gave it rights to dispatch car service for convention VIPs, organizers said.

The head of the cab drivers’ union said Uber workers had tried to keep drivers away from a main access spot for the Wells Fargo Center near 10th Street and Packer Avenue on Monday night as the convention opened.

“There’s only one entrance,” Ron Blount said. “How can it just be exclusively theirs?”

Uber said its staff had only diverted vehicles from an area assigned exclusively to the company for dropping off or picking up passengers.

“Due to a logistical issue yesterday, there were cases in which non-Uber rides attempted to drop off at the DNCC-assigned Uber lot,” Craig Ewer, an Uber spokesman, said Tuesday.

The ride-hailing app company Lyft shared the cabdrivers’ concerns.

“We did get reports of drivers who were turned away at the perimeter by someone wearing an Uber shirt,” said Lyft spokeswoman Chelsea Wilson. “It’s unfortunate that anyone would try to make it harder for drivers to do their jobs and for passengers to get around.”

The walk from the Wells Fargo Center to the Uber tent in Lot T outside Citizens Bank Park takes about 10 minutes.

Around 7 p.m. Tuesday, as delegates trickled in before prime-time speeches started, there was ample room in the Uber lounge, an air-conditioned tent with a seating area, charging stations, water bottles, Kind protein bars, coffee, and M&Ms bearing the Uber logo.

Most car services were allowed to drop off passengers at the Wells Fargo Center at Lot V, while Ubers were assigned to Lot T, DNC spokesman Lee Whack said, adding that all legal car services had access.

“Any and every legal transportation service has access to the parking lots of Wells Fargo Center to pick up and discharge passengers,” he said.

Blount also said he saw Uber vehicles parked at cab stands throughout the city in the first two days of the convention.

Shortly before the convention, Uber and the Philadelphia Parking Authority reached an agreement that allowed the service, which was technically illegal in the city, to operate freely. That agreement was bolstered when the Pennsylvania legislature passed a bill two weeks ago giving ride hailing app companies legal status in the city until the fall. That frustrated cabdrivers, who have lost significant business since Uber came to Philadelphia. They demonstrated Monday night outside an Uber-hosted party to fight for guaranteed minimum wages for drivers.

The convention has been a boon to both Uber and Lyft, the companies said. Lyft reported boosted business and Uber reported 60 percent more customers this Monday than the previous week.

As the convention continued, Uber officials said they expected fewer disruptions.

“The appropriate arrival lots have since been clarified, and we expect the process to run smoothly tonight,” Ewer said.

Tim Kaine Introduces Himself to Nation in Accepting Vice Presidential Nomination

PHILADELPHIA — Tim Kaine introduced himself to the American people on Wednesday night, accepting his place on the Democratic ticket and firing his first prime-time shots at its foe.

A politician unaccustomed to the glare of the national spotlight stepped squarely into it Wednesday night to “humbly accept” the vice presidential nomination at Democratic National Convention.

Kaine, the junior senator from Virginia, wove personal tales of his upbringing with scathing criticism of Republican nominee Donald Trump and declared Hillary Clinton “ready to fight, ready to win, ready to lead.”

For Kaine, it was the speech of lifetime. Once a mayor, then a governor, he also delivered remarks to the Democratic conventions in 2008 and 2012. But Wednesday was his prime time debut, and most Americans had never seen him speak for an extended period like this.

“I’ll be honest with you,” he told a full crowd at he Wells Fargo Center. “I never expected to be here. But let me tell you how it happened.”

Kaine aimed for three targets. First, to make his first impression on wider public who isn’t aware of his background. Second, to shore up his progressive credentials at a convention that has seen mass unrest from some supporters of Bernie Sanders. And third, to draw a deep contrast between his running mate and Donald Trump.

Kaine has been knocked in the past for not being the most electrifying of speakers, and critics doubted whether he had the fire inside to unleash continuous critiques on Donald Trump in an attack dog role a vice presidential candidate traditionally takes on.

But he tried to channel Trump on Wednesday night in offering an impression of the real estate mogul’s consistent promises to “believe” him.

“It’s gonna be great — believe me!” Kaine quipped in a section that got one of the strongest reactions from the crowd. “We’re gonna build a wall and make Mexico pay for it — believe me! We’re gonna destroy ISIS so fast — believe me! There’s nothing suspicious in my tax returns — believe me!

“By the way, does anyone here believe that Donald Trump’s been paying his fair share of taxes? Do you believe he ought to release those tax returns like every other presidential candidate in modern history? Of course he should. Donald, what are you hiding?”

It was a continuation of Kaine’s comfort in taking swipes at the Republican nominee, as Wednesday morning he referred to Trump at a Virginia delegation breakfast as “a one-man wrecking crew when it comes to the alliances that we have with other nations.”

Some progressive groups have displayed disappointment in Clinton’s choice of Kaine, whose past has been repeatedly referred to as “moderate.” Many members of the audience held up signs protesting the TPP while Kaine spoke.

But in his speech, Kaine went off-script after he got a rousing reaction of “Bernie!” cheers by mentioning his time serving on the Senate Budget Committee with Sanders. “We should all ‘feel the Bern’ and not get burned by the other guy!” he shouted.

Kaine also aimed to highlight his past as a civil rights attorney who worked to defend individuals involved in housing discrimination cases. “I took on banks and landlords, real estate firms and local governments, anyone who treated people unfairly — like the insurance company that was discriminating against minority neighborhoods all across America in issuing homeowners’ insurance,” he said.

[Kaine: ‘I Trust Hillary Clinton’]

In recounting his life story for the audience, Kaine reminded them of the civil rights past of his father-in-law, former Virginia Gov. Linwood Holton, and how he sees the Republican Party has shifted. “Anne’s parents, Lin and Jinks, are here today, 90-plus and going strong,” Kaine said. “Lin’s still a Republican. But he’s voting for a lot of Democrats these days. Because any party that would nominate Donald Trump for president has moved too far away from his party of Lincoln. And if any of you are looking for that party of Lincoln, we’ve got a home for you right here in the Democratic Party.”

The senator also invoked his son Nat, who serves in the Marines, and who deployed on Monday to serve overseas in Europe. “As he’s serving our nation abroad,” Kaine said, “I trust Hillary Clinton with our son’s life.”

Kaine has been railing against Trump for several days now for questioning the role that America must play in defending NATO allies, and upped that critique Wednesday night in reminding the crowd that his family has a very personal stake in how Trump refers to the nation’s armed forces. Earlier Wednesday, he noted his son left “to go serve right on the front line and in the countries in NATO that Trump is suggesting he wants to throw overboard and just leave to the mercies of the big, bad wolf Russian Vladimir Putin.”

Since getting the call Friday evening while he was fundraising in Newport, Rhode Island, Kaine has been continually gushing about how “humbled” he is a this opportunity. “If you had told me, or if you had told my parents who are 81 and with me this week, that I was gonna be here in July of 2016, they would not have believe it,” Kaine told delegates from Iowa at breakfast Wednesday morning.

“None of us would have believed it.”

Police: Suspect steals $30,000 worth of hair extension from salon

UPPER MARLBORO, Md. – Prince George’s County police said $30,000 worth of hair extensions were stolen from a hair salon in Upper Marlboro.

A surveillance camera inside the salon captured a man making off with tubs of hair extensions from Essence Hair Club. The business is one of about 30 small establishments housed within a facility called Phenix Salon Suites.

The manager said there was work being done on one of the shops in the overnight hours of July 11 going into the following day. He believes a door was left open and the suspect was able to walk in, break into the door of his shop and make off with the weaves.

Extensions and weaves are expensive and apparently there is a large market for stolen merchandise in our area.

“It’s very expensive,” said hair stylist Netrease Smith. “People work hard for their money. I dislike people who take from others because we work hard for our stuff.”

Essence Hair Club supplies extensions to several of the salons in the building and it didn’t take long for us to hear about other recent thefts, including one at the Phenix facility in Northeast D.C. during the week before.

A police report said there were two female suspects in that case and it happened during business hours. We are told they pepper-sprayed the shop owner.

“Same thing happened – the girl got robbed for all her hair,” said Smith.

Why are these extensions so expensive? They are 100 percent virgin hair, which means it is human hair that has never been processed. According to Smith, one bundle costs from $100 to $120 and it takes about five or six bundles to make a full head of hair.

Democrats accuse Trump of disloyalty over Clinton emails

Donald Trump used a press conference to call for Russia to hack Hillary Clinton. He referenced 33,000 emails missing from a private server Clinton used while secretary of state

Donald Trump appeared to call on Russian intelligence agencies Wednesday to find 30,000 of Hillary Clinton’s deleted emails, adding a stunning twist to the uproar over Moscow’s alleged intervention in the presidential election.

“They probably have her 33,000 e-mails. I hope they do. They probably have her 33,000 e-mails that she lost and deleted because you’d see some beauties there. So let’s see,” Trump said at a news conference in Florida.

He was referring to emails on the personal server that Clinton used to conduct official business as secretary of state but that she deemed private and did not hand over to the State Department.

The GOP nominee’s comments sparked an immediate furor at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, as well as claims by Clinton’s campaign that Trump was endangering national security and even conspiring with a U.S. foe. Former Defense Secretary and CIA Director Leon Panetta denounced Trump’s “irresponsible” comments from the convention floor, saying that the presidential candidate “asked the Russians to interfere in American politics.”

Donald Trump: “They said, ‘Debbie, you’re fired'”

Donald Trump seemed to relish the downfall of DNC Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, as he campaigned with running mate Mike Pence in Roanoke, Virginia.

“I always knew she was highly overrated,” he said. “Not good. But she just got fired,” Trump said. “They said ‘Debbie, you’re fired!'”

DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz booed at delegates’ event

He spent several minutes talking about Wasserman Schultz, who on Monday was booed by her own state’s delegation and dropped her original plans to gavel in the opening session over fears she could receive the same reception on the convention floor. She had announced Sunday she would step down as DNC chair over a cache of DNC emails released by Wikileaks showing that top party officials had disparaged Bernie Sanders during the primary campaign.

“Debbie was totally loyal to Hillary, and Hillary threw her under the bus,” Trump said. “Man, I don’t want her covering my back.”

Wasserman Schultz, he said, “worked very hard to rig the system” for Clinton. “Little did she know that China, Russia…came in and hacked the hell out of us,” Trump said, referring to Clinton campaign accusations that Russia might be behind the hacking of the DNC email system. Then, he quipped that investigators might find even more. “I guarantee they’ll find the 33,000 emails,” he said.

Trump marvelled at the idea that DNC officials would bring up Sanders’ religion. And he noted that Sanders had himself told his supporters to vote for Clinton and Kaine, “and his own people are out there booing. It’s pretty bad,” he said.

He also attacked Clinton’s new running mate Tim Kaine, the governor of Virginia, saying that he’s “done a terrible job for Virginia,” and “nobody even knows who he is.”

Kaine, Trump said, compared unfavorably to his own running mate, Pence — charging that GDP had remained flat, unemployment doubled, and he had proposed a $4 billion tax hike on Virginians, including those making as little as $17,000 per year. Kaine was, however governor during the the financial crisis, when unemployment rose across the U.S. and growth stagnated.

“Weird little dude there. I don’t know what’s going on there,” he also said of Kaine at one point.

Aside from the town hall, Trump was openly aggravated about the temperature in the hotel ballroom.

“Everyone is sweating and soaking wet, right? here’s the difference. I wouldn’t pay the hotel bill,” he said. “If we’re in a ballroom, it’s not supposed to be so hot that everybody in the audience is using a fan.”

Trump hypothesized that the temperature soared because the hotel was trying to save money.

“It’s cooler outside than it is in this damn ballroom,” he groused. “I think the ballroom and the people that run this hotel should be ashamed of themselves.”
