5am – E Salami sliced! Turin set to become Italy’s first vegetarian city under new mayor’s plans. (Daily Mail) — The new mayor of Turin has provoked much debate with her decision to make vegan diets a priority in the northern Italian city over the next five years. Chiara Appendino, who defeated the incumbent Democrat Piero Fassino in June, belongs to anti-establishment party, Five Star Movement which was founded by Italian comic Beppe Grillo in 2009 and has come out of nowhere to become what appears to be a dominant force in Italian politics. The party’s 62-page manifesto stated: ‘The promotion of vegan and vegetarian diets is a fundamental act in safeguarding our environment, the health of our citizens and the welfare of our animals.’
6am – A/B/C Hillary Clinton VP Search In Final Hours: Speculation surrounds Tim Kaine ahead of Clinton VP reveal. RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) – Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton could make her first appearance with her new running mate as early as Friday. The vice-presidential candidate could be Virginia senator Tim Kaine. There has been much discussion heading into the weekend surrounding Kaine as a potential VP pick, as the Republican national convention winds down, and the Democratic convention kicks off. So far, Senator Kaine has been coy when asked if he has been offered the job.
6am – D Should DC police have arrested protesters for blocking traffic on streets and sidewalks? (Fox 5 DC) — WASHINGTON – Many people are still talking about video we posted on our FOX 5 Facebook page taken at a Black Lives Matter protest held in Northeast D.C. on Wednesday. The protesters formed a human chain to block off traffic while there were also some tense confrontations between protesters and pedestrians. Some people walking in the area were attempting to pass by the protesters, but these demonstrators would not allow them to pass. We captured one man attempting to get to work having some words with protesters who would not allow him to continue on the sidewalk citing his “white privilege.” In another incident, a father on a bicycle with his children in tow tried to get through, but were corralled by some of the protesters and forced out. We received a lot of reaction to these interactions from FOX 5 viewers on our Facebook page and it came from people of all backgrounds.
6am – E Suspending a chicken over your bed could protect against Zika virus and malaria. It sounds like a pretty ‘fowl’ suggestion but the odour of chickens could be the key to preventing malaria or even Zika, scientists believe. Experiments by Swedish and Ethiopian scientists found that mosquitoes steer clear of homes which contain a live chicken suspended in a cage. The researchers believe mosquitoes are wary of chickens because the birds eat the insects, and their blood is not nutritious enough to be worth the taking the risk. Crucially the mosquitos do not even have to see the chicken to be diverted. The smell alone creates a poultry ‘odour bubble’ which deters even the hungriest mosquito from going anywhere near the pungent source. Most mosquitoes will not even enter a house that contains a chicken, let alone a bedroom. But is suspending a chicken in your bedroom sounds a little extreme, scientists have isolated the chemical compounds and are now planning to develop a repellent. Professor Richard Ignell, of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences, said: “We were surprised to find that malaria mosquitoes are repelled by the odors emitted by chickens.
7am – A/B Reaction To Trump’s Acceptance Speech / Calls
7am – D/E R.I.P. old friend. The last VCR will be manufactured this month. Funai Electric, the world’s last known VCR manufacturer, says it will cease production of video-cassette recorders this month. Japanese firm Funai started manufacturing VCRs in 1983, and at one point was selling 15 million units a year. Alas, the clunky VCR has since been replaced by an array of new technologies: DVDs, Blu-ray, and now, streaming video services. Last year, Funai sold 750,000 units, and found it was getting harder to find the parts to make VCRs. A Funai spokesperson said that customers have been the company and asking where they can find the last few products. VCRs for home use were introduced in the 1960s, gaining traction after Sony brought lower-priced models to market. Other Japanese manufacturers, including Panasonic, RCA, JVC and Toshiba, were also instrumental in developing the VCR.
8am – A INTERVIEW — DR. STEPHEN FARNSWORTH – Professor of Political Science and International Affairs at University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, VA @drsfarnsworth
- TOPIC: Hillary Veep talk / preview DNC next week
- Hillary Clinton VP Search In Final Hours. WASHINGTON — (CNN) Hillary Clinton’s methodical search for a running mate is nearly complete, several Democrats close to the vice presidential process say, and she is planning to introduce her new political partner during a campaign rally in Miami on Saturday.
- Speculation surrounds Tim Kaine ahead of Clinton VP reveal. “It’s wonderful to be mentioned,” Kaine said Wednesday.
- Va. Sen. Tim Kaine tops Hillary Clinton’s VP short list. ARLINGTON, Va. (ABC7) — Virginia Senator Tim Kaine is reportedly at the top of Hillary Clinton’s VP list, but for Kaine Thursday was business as usual. Kaine held a closed-door roundtable on immigration issues in Arlington, with Senator Kaine calling for immigration legislation to pass in Congress. Kaine says he is happy with his role as Senator and is not seeking a new job. However, many media reports have Kaine as a top 3 contender for Clinton’s VP pick, along with Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and Labor Secretary Tom Perez. Kaine was vetted for then-Senator Obama’s VP pick in 2008, so he says he is used to this process.
- Bill Clinton wants Kaine for Dem VP: report. Bill Clinton reportedly expressed support for Sen. Tim Kaine (D-Va.) to serve as presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton’s running mate, The New York Times reported.
8am – B Entertainment News:
- Tim Kaine hammered by ‘The Hulk,’ bank support is ‘disqualifying’ for VP. CLEVELAND — Hoping to derail his chances at becoming Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton’s running mate, progressive backers of Sen. Bernie Sanders, and Hollywood’s “The Hulk,” ripped Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine as a patsy for Wall Street. With numerous reports suggesting that Clinton will announce Kaine as her vice presidential pick on Friday, his opponents drew attention to letters he just signed in support of slowing bank regulations. Mark Ruffalo, who has played The Hulk, tweeted, “Wrong Choice…Tim Kaine Calls To Deregulate Banks As He Campaigns To Be Clinton’s VP.”
- Ridiculously Awesome New Trailer Released For ‘Sharknado: The 4th Awakens.’ (ET) – It wouldn’t be summer without a new “Sharknado” movie, and this year’s fourth entry in the so-bad-it’s-hilarious flying-shark franchise pulls out all the stops, featuring a heavy nod to “Star Wars” with “Sharknado: The 4th Awakens”. Ian Ziering and Tara Reid are back (the latter presumably not dead following the final moments of the third movie), as is David Hasselhoff, with a roster of guest stars including Tommy Davidson, Imani Hakim, Cody Linley, Masiela Lusha, Cheryl Tiegs and Gary Busey — marking the first time we may see sharks fleeing from one of the celebrity guest stars instead of the other way around. According to the official synopsis for the made-for-TV movie, “The 4th Awakens” is set five years after the events of the third movie. Finn (Ziering), “his family and the cosmos have been blissfully sharknado-free in the intervening years, but now sharks — and ‘nados! — are being whipped up in places (and ways) least expected.” This time out, the action shifts to Las Vegas, which, despite being in the middle of the desert, will be plagued with its very first sharknado. The always sublime silliness comes to a TV screen near you on July 31.
- Star Trek Beyond Comes Out Today! PLOT: A surprise attack in outer space forces the Enterprise to crash-land on a mysterious world. The assault came from Krall (Idris Elba), a lizard-like dictator who derives his energy by sucking the life out of his victims. Krall needs an ancient and valuable artifact that’s aboard the badly damaged starship. Left stranded in a rugged wilderness, Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and the rest of the crew must now battle a deadly alien race while trying to find a way off their hostile planet. Release date: July 22, 2016 (USA)
- Amber Heard ‘spending time with’ Elon Musk amid Depp divorce. Is Amber Heard, who is currently going through a nasty divorce with Johnny Depp, being comforted by Elon Musk? According to a source, the beautiful actress spent the weekend at the Delano South Beach with the single-again Tesla billionaire. One witness said, “They were seen arriving to, and leaving, the same room many times, but always separately. He was seen going in at night and doing a ‘walk of shame’ in the morning.” Musk was in Florida for the launch of a SpaceX Rocket from Cape Canaveral, while Heard was there for work, we’re told. But sources close to both Heard and Musk insist they are friends and he allowed her to use his room while he was working on his rocket launch.
8am – C State Department Spokesman Calls Out Reporter For Playing Pokemon GO In Briefing: WASHINGTON — (CNN) The Pokemon GO craze came to the State Department on Thursday, when a reporter was called out for playing the popular game during a briefing. “You’re playing the Pokemon thing right there, aren’t you,” State Department spokesman John Kirby asked a reporter during the daily briefing. Kirby had been in the middle of discussing ongoing efforts by an anti-ISIS coalition to fight terror. The reporter, who hasn’t been identified, responded, “I’m just keeping an eye on it.” Kirby resumed talking about the coalition — saying the fight “won’t be easy” and the department is “clear-eyed about the work” it has to do. Then he circled back to the Pokemon GO playing reporter, asking him, “Did you get one?” The reporter responded that he did not, because “the signal’s not very good.” Kirby said, “I’m sorry about that” before continuing the briefing.
