Air and Space Museum Celebrates 40 Years of Flight with 24 Hours of Festivities

WASHINGTON — (WMAL) The Smithsonian’s Air and Space Museum is set to celebrate its 40th birthday with an all night bash in the newly-renovated ‘Boeing Milestones of Flight’ Hall this Friday night.

The centerpiece of the renovated gallery is an interactive, touch screen wall display among the artifacts, which visitors can sync with  , and whose artifacts can even be synced by visitors to the museum’s new smartphone app.

Fans of the Star Trek franchise can geek out to a model of the USS Enterprise, which will stand alongside flight fanatic favorite the “Spirit of St. Louis and a lunar module similar to the one landed by Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong in 1969.

In addition the newest installments, the museum will play host to an overnight extravaganza of activities for everyone, from a film festival and special guest appearances to guided tours and a scavenger hunt.

As always, the Air and Space Museum is free to the public.

The re-opening of ‘Boeing Milestones’ celebrates what Nick Partridge, a spokesman for the Smithsonian, calls the “central and largest exhibit space” in downtown Washington.

Since its opening in 1976 over 327 million visitors have laid eyes on the museum’s aviation-inspired exhibits.
