WASHINGTON — (WMAL) He’s a practicing Jew, but Maryland State Senator Jamie Raskin will be among thousands of atheists gathering for a rally at the Lincoln Memorial Saturday.

More than 30,000 people are expected at the Reason Rally, which is being held to promote the idea that reason and scientific evidence should be used to make legislative decisions, not religious beliefs.

Even though he’s Jewish, Raskin said he’s also a big defender of the separation of the basic constitutional principle of separation of church and state.

“People can be inspired and motivated by their religious faith, but they can’t impose a particular creed on everybody else,” said Raskin.

He pointed to the example of people who deny scientific support for climate change. In this case, he said these beliefs are hindering efforts to curb climate change and save the human race.

Raskin will be among the speakers at Saturday’s rally, which runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
