Alexandria, VA — (WMAL) A Woodbridge man could spend up to 48 years in prison for helping another man who was trying to join the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant.

26 year-old Mahmoud Amin Mohamed Elhassan of Woodbridge was indicted by a federal grand jury Thursday on charges of conspiracy to provide material support to ISIL, aiding and abetting the provision of material support to ISIL, and giving false statements given to the FBI.

According to the indictment, Elhassan introduced Joseph Hassan Farrokh to a person he thought could connect the man to ISIL, drove Farrokh to the airport so he could travel to the Islamic State, and lied to the FBI to cover it all up.

The indictment accuses Elhassan of telling the FBI Farrokh took a flight out of Dulles to go to a funeral in California and planned to fly back in two weeks. He also denied that either of them supported ISIL or tried to join.

Elhassan will be arraigned June 3.
