Rep. Chris Van Hollen has pulled ahead to defeat fellow Rep. Donna Edwards for the Maryland Democratic Senate nomination, according to CNN projections.

Van Hollen won despite early campaign success by Edwards.

The contenders fought to replace retiring Senator Barbara Mikulski’s seat.
