WASHINGTON — (CNN) Ted Cruz’s campaign is “narrowing” its list of potential vice-presidential choices and it includes Carly Fiorina, an indication that the campaign could choose a running mate while he continues to battle for the GOP nomination.

The Texas senator is considering naming Fiorina, a prominent surrogate and a former GOP White House rival, as his running mate, a Cruz campaign adviser confirmed Monday.

“He is vetting a number of solid candidates, and certainly Ms. Fiorina is absolutely one of them,” Chad Sweet, Cruz’s campaign chairperson, told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “The Lead.”

“She’s one of the most talented business leaders of modern times.”

Fiorina aide Sarah Isgur Flores confirmed that the former Hewlett-Packard CEO was being vetted for a possible pick on a Cruz ticket.

Top Cruz aides Monday sought to end a day of news reports about Cruz’s veepstakes, downplaying any vetting as a normal part a fall campaign plan.

But Cruz aides were coy about timing or a decision.

“We have narrowed our VP candidates to a short list and are going thru the normal processes associated with picking a running mate,” Cruz campaign manager Jeff Roe tweeted.

Cruz’s chief strategist, Jason Johnson, went a bit further, tweeting that the vetting process had begun. “Of course we’re vetting potential VP candidates. It’s nearly May, of TWENTY SIXTEEN.”

Cruz trails Donald Trump in the delegate race, but it is possible that no GOP nominee would reach the convention with the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination on the first ballot.

Delegates there will also choose the vice presidential nominee on a separate ballot.
