WASHINGTON — (WMAL) The Chairman of Prince William County’s Board of Supervisors is dead set on keeping property tax bills flat; but he says that means cutting proposed funding to county schools by around $7 million.

“This would help us balance the budget, it would help us to keep tax bills the lowest in the region,” says Prince William County Board of Supervisors Chairman Corey Stewart.

He says keeping spending down will save property owners about $70 on their real-estate tax bills next year.

“It doesn’t seem like a lot of money, but it’s cumulative. If you have a tax increase every year, eventually people are taxed out of their homes,” he said.

School Board Chairman Ryan Sawyers says a $7 million cut will likely mean even larger class sizes, hiring set backs and stagnant salaries for teachers.

“I think the County Board of Supervisors should value education more than it does,” Sawyers told WMAL–especially, he says, since “everybody who ran for office in 2015 ran on lower class sizes.”
