WASHINGTON (WMAL)– D.C.’s Alcohol Licensing Board will end a decades-old moratorium on new liquor licenses for restaurants and some other public places.

The moratorium was put in place in 1988, after Georgetown residents complained about an influx of new bars in their neighborhood.

“It was a different era back when the moratorium was first instituted,” says Georgetown ANC Commissioner Ed Solomon. “The time was right to do away with the moratorium.”

Solomon notes that both residents and restaurant owners supported ending the moratorium.

“I think it’s a win win for everyone,” he says.
