WASHINGTON (WMAL) — The man originally believed to have been involved in the bombing of an international airport and a subway station in Brussels was mistakenly misidentified, according to the BBC.
Belgian media are retracting their original reports following information that a man arrested on Wednesday was one of three men filmed on CCTV just prior to the Zaventem airport attack. It has been discovered that that detained suspect was not the man originally identified by news outlets.
ISIS has claimed responsibility for the attacks.
Security has been ramped up at transportation hubs in major American cities, as well as in Europe. Governments around the globe are on high alert following the similtaneous bombings that killed at least 31 people and injured at least an additional 100. The Brussels-Zaventem International Airport remains closed.
Belgium is observing three days of mourning in honor of the victims of the attacks. A minute’s silence was held midday on Wednesday in the European capitol. Tributes have poured in from around the world as the international community mourns yet another terrorist attack in a major European city.
