WASHINGTON (WMAL)– A Major League Baseball legend and broadcaster has died.
The Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Wednesday that Joe Garagiola, 90, passed away.
In a Twitter post, the team said, ” We are deeply saddened by the loss of baseball legend and former #Dbacks broadcaster Joe Garagiola.”
Garagiola played in the major leagues from 1946 until 1954. Over the course of his career, he played for the St. Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Chicago Cubs, and the New York Giants.
After retiring as a player, he went on to be the play-by-play baseball announcer for NBC for almost 30 years and became a fixture on the “Today” show.
In 1991, he was awarded the Ford Frick Award by the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Garagiola has been in ill health in recent years.
He worked well into his 80’s and even served as a part-time analyst for the Diamondbacks telecast.
