WASHINGTON (WMAL)– Ahead of tonight’s State of the District address, commentators are abuzz about how Muriel Bowser will reflect on her first year as D.C. Mayor.

The Washingtonian’s Harry Jaffe says that the number-one issue Bowser should talk about is crime.

“Too many people still feel unsafe in their neighborhoods,” Jaffe says. “You can’t keep living on the fact that murder rates are down from what they were in the 1990s. It’s now 2016, and it’s a different measure.”

Jaffe also expects Bowser to discuss her accomplishments increasing affordable housing in the district.

“She has required developers, as near as I can tell, to include affordable housing in their developments,” Jaffe says.

Bowser will give her State of the District address at 5:30 p.m. tonight at Arena Stage in Southwest D.C.
