WASHINGTON (WMAL) —  Former Virginia Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli has withdrawn his name from consideration for the state Supreme Court. The move comes a day after a state Senate committee nominated him to succeed Justice Jane Marum Roush, whom Governor Terry McAuliffe appointed to the court on an interim basis to succeed retiring Justice LeRoy Millette.

Republican Sen. Ryan McDougle said on Wednesday that Cuccinelli isn’t interested in sitting on the court.

Earlier today, Cuccinelli told WMAL’s Mornings on the Mall, “I have to say that I’m very honored to be considered but that it’s really not appropriate for someone in consideration for judicial appointment to make public comment on it.”

State Sen. Glen Sturtevant said he would back the nomination on the Senate floor, but there was outcry from liberals who said Cuccinelli promoted an ultra-conservative agenda while serving as attorney general.

Senate Republicans have a new nominee: appeals judge Stephen McCullogh.
