WASHINGTON — (WMAL) An Afghanistan veteran has been fired from CVS for doing what he knew best – protecting those around him.
Joe Morici, the former CVS manager, sprang into action when two robbers hopped the pharmacy counter, attempting to steal narcotics.
Morici confronted the would-be robbers, when one turned around and attacked him with a screwdriver.
“I turned around and chased them to the doors, and that’s where the struggle happened,” said Morici. “I disarmed the one guy with the screwdriver while pinning the other guy against our set of doors. So yeah, it was a little crazy.”
Morici was able to recover most, if not all, of the narcotics, though the assailants were able to escape.
Though one of his supervisors privately thanked him for preventing the robbery, there was nothing that the supervisor could do to help Morici. CVS policy instructs employees not to physically engage with criminals.
“There was really no thought process,” said Morici. “There wasn’t like I took a minute to think about it. It just happened.”
Luckily for the seven year Army veteran, it looks like he won’t remain unemployed for long. Several local employers, including WMAL listeners, have offered him positions across the region, ranging from private security gigs to auto body mechanics.
Even the Prince George’s Police Department might be on Morici’s side. After providing a statement to the Prince George’s county police officers and noting that CVS would probably fire him, Morici says that he was encouraged to apply for a job with the force.
