WMAL is proud to nominate “Postcards from Vienna” as Outstanding Feature or Human Interest Story in the Chesapeake Associated Press awards competition.
WMAL News reporter Nicole Raz spent two months in Vienna, Austria during the Fall of 2015 as a Journalism Exchange Fellow through the International Center for Journalists. During that time, Raz reported primarily for local Austrian news outlets, but she also filed reports for our audience back home in Washington, D.C. Her assignment – to show us how Europeans view stories that are of significance to Americans.
Raz’ weekly “Postcards from Vienna” explored both global issues, such as the Syrian Migrant crisis that was escalating in Europe during her time in Austria, and uniquely American stories, such as the problems with mass gun violence. Raz also explored long-term paid leave for workers, which is just finding its way in the U.S., but is commonplace in Europe. Finally, she examined the rapid spread of American football fandom in Europe in a visit to an Austrian sports bar.
