FAIRFAX — (WMAL) With Nevada holding its Republican caucus for President on Tuesday, four of the five GOP candidates are campaigning out west to start the week, but John Kasich is holding court in Virginia.
The Old Dominion is one of a handful of true battleground states for the 2016 general election, and as the most moderate voice remaining in the GOP field, the Ohio Governor is establishing a beachhead in what could be his last stand of the 2016 primary campaign.
Kasich will visit George Mason University Monday for a 10 am town hall meeting, where he’ll take questions from audience members.
“This is just an opportunity for Senator [John] Warner and myself to introduce John Kasich to Northern Virginia voters,” says former Virginia Congressman Tom Davis, who is serving as Kasich’s State Chairman.
Davis, who himself was known as one of the few remaining moderate voices in the GOP before he left Congress, says Kasich has what it takes to win in November if he can make it through the Republican Convention in July.
“Republicans need to focus on someone who can win, and you’ve had two national polls out just this week that show John Kasich is the strongest Republican against either Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton, who he beats by double digits,” says Davis, who predicts Kasich will make a strong showing in Northern Virginia, the Richmond and Tidewater areas.
Kasich will have a head start on the rest of the field, but not for long. Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and Ben Carson all have appearances scheduled in the Commonwealth later this week.
