WASHINGTON — (WMAL) The Iceman Cometh… and he stayed around longer than expected.

Temperatures rose slowly overnight, but not quickly enough to melt away much of the ice that is coating neighborhood streets and sidewalks. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for areas north and west of D.C. through 10 am this morning, with up to a quarter-inch more of freezing rain expected. Areas from DC to the south and east remain under a Winter Weather Advisory until 10 am, with a coating of freezing rain possible.

The precipitation will change to all rain as the morning goes on, but too late to allow schools to open. All public schools in the DC area are closed Tuesday, except for DC Public Schools, which will open two hours late.

While the interstates are moving well Tuesday morning, many state highways are still in poor shape, and numerous accidents have slowed traffic in many spots to a crawl.
