WASHINGTON (WMAL) – Prince William County residents will still have to pay a $50 fee to apply for concealed carry permits, after a discussion by the board of supervisors yesterday.
Chairman Corey Stewart proposed getting rid of the $50 fee, saying the right to bear arms is a God-given right.
“We don’t charge people for their rights, for their rights that were guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. We don’t do it. Yes, there’s a permit for driving, but driving is not a right, it’s a privilege,” said Stuart.
County Clerk Michele McQuigg and Sheriff Glendell Hill spoke out against the proposal. Hill said more people would apply for concealed carry permits if they didn’t have to pay for them, and he would need to hire another employee to process this influx of applications.
“I will need another full-time clerk because my civil division is struggling just horribly. We’re not doing things as timely as we should,” McQuigg said.
